For
someone who rides the junkin’ rails on a nearly daily basis, I completely
managed to miss the train to Pyrexville.
I realize many of you Pyrex People have been bringing home mixing
bowls and refrigerator sets for eons but for those of us just waking up to the Pyrex experience (HelloMyNameIsAmy), I feel as though in the last year
or so, there has been a sudden EXPLOSION of Pyrex collecting, hoarding, sharing and selling.
Or does everyone feel like that when they're the last one to catch on?
Then there are the Two (Pyrex Crazy) Thrifting Sisters. A google image search of them is Pyrex-crazy
indeed!

And
there’s not just one or even two Pyrex Collectives – there are three of them!
With links to even more Pyrex-loving types pyrexing their hearts out.

And me?
I’ve
taken one lonely photo of other people’s Pyrex, because I liked the display, not because I have a clue about anything
Pyrex.
On Instagram,
this is my #1 hearted photo -- it outhearted any Vintage Christmas photo I’ve
posted so far -- who knew?! I mean, you probably knew but I DID NOT KNOW. About the w i d e s p r e a d love of Pyrex.
In an
effort to signal my late entry into the Great Pyrex Awareness of the 21st
Century, I’ve started a Pyrex (and more) collection of my own, safely contained
on a Pinterest board where it won’t take up space at home, be washed in a dishwasher
or get chipped or broken.
Pyrex poster is from etsy shop Pocono Modern
Live
and learn. SO much to learn. Now hoping to find a Pyrex for Beginners
support group.
My 23 year old daughter loves and collects Pyrex too. I got her that print for Christmas last year. I do love the pieces I have.
ReplyDeleteI am definitely in the same boat (bowl?) as you! Very late to the party, and not sure what I'm wearing! The turquoise color is my favorite, but I'm not in love with the pattern. Plus it doesn't match my decor. Neither does the pink, another favorite. Am leaning to the red and yellow of the Friendship birds. Unless I find those dots very cheap! And that poster is fantastic!
ReplyDeleteI'm not really THAT into Pyrex, to be honest. I have some spring blossom because it matches my kitchen. Otherwise, I sell all I come across. Isn't it crazy what that one stupid black casserole sold for? $77! I paid 50 cents for it! People are nuts. Or maybe I'm just cheap.
ReplyDeletePyrex is so fun and colorful! I've more recently jumped on the ban wagon of it too! :) A few months ago I found my first piece....a pink daisy design, I just love it!! I had to laugh a bit when you said you're collection is safety on your Pinterest board! lol. Good idea!! ;) Wishing you a lovely day!! xo Holly
ReplyDeleteBe happy that you missed the train. It can be a rough ride what with all the overpricing going on at the thrifts and a lot of the sellers at antique malls, online, and shows being misled into thinking they have Pyrex made of gold. I'm ready to get of this train. It's not very fun anymore. There are a million other things I can collect. Vintage Christmas, anyone? HA!

Funny post! I love my Pyrex and I'm a member of the first blog! We have all slowed down in the last year it seems as Pyrex has gotten pretty hard to find at the thrifts and are pricey! Still we love our patterns! My fav is my Pink Gooseberry bowl set.
ReplyDeleteI'm a moderate collector due to money and space restrictions. I splurged on my primary bowl set at the antique mall when I had some Christmas money but all my other pieces have been thrifted and gifted. I've bought a couple at the antique shops when I've had birthday money but for $7.00 and under. I just buy any piece I find at the thrifts since I plan on having a booth some day. I come home and google the number on the bottom if I don't know what it is called. I've bought some pieces at the thrifts that have baked on grease but they clean up! it's a fun hobby! ♥
ReplyDeleteI missed that train too Amy. Have actually never bought a piece or do I have any in my house. (No collection challenge on that one). The closest I ever get it the serving bowl that my mom uses that is Pyrex. End of Pyrex story for me.
ReplyDeleteI like Pyrex just fine, but it's either Pyrex or Jade-ite in this house - no room for both - and I think we know which one is going to win out. (But those little refrigerator dishes? Pretty hard to resist. And tiny.)
ReplyDeletep.s. the most shocking thing I've read today is Laurie's confession that she does not have Pyrex.
ReplyDeleteI don't do the Pyrex thing either. I have bought a few pieces to sell in my booth, but I don't own any. Oh, I do have a couple fridgies, I think they are called, but they hold my business cards. I do think the displays of the collectors are pretty, but it's just not for me.
ReplyDeleteHell as officially frozen over.... there is actually something Magpie doesn't have a collection of....;)
ReplyDeleteBarbara's Jade-ite is truly a worthy opponent to Pyrex.
In Gina's home, I can only imagine a Pyrex collection in red and aqua. That would be stunning!
Other than the refrigerator pieces (which I use to hold creamer and sweetener), I don't collect any either. I do have an eye for platonite though.
Ooh, I'm loving all your pretty Pyrex pictures even though they're only on your Pinterest board, which I plan on following by the way. I haven't jumped on that train, but I do love it, especially all the pink and turquoise. I use what I have, really I do.
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness! I have a set like your first picture and a set of the covered dishes. I still use them almost daily. I received them as wedding gifts 50 years ago. I love that they are still popular. judy j
ReplyDeleteI've been using Pyrex bowls ever since I received my first set when I married 40 years ago!! And I used to find lots of Pyrex available at the Goodwill for a very reasonable price. But like you said, an explosion has happened upon the Pyrex world and the prices are sky rocketing and are harder to find. I use mine every single day and guess what? They don't break as easily as the newer stuff out on the market ;-) Happy hunting!
ReplyDeleteI have been collecting for 5 years & am a member of the original Pyrex Collective. Pyrex collecting isn't as fun as it used to be - antique markets are cleared out of rarer items so people can trade online, everyone buys it to deal, I used to be able to bring home 5-10 pieces a week & now I am lucky if I can bring home more than 1 piece a month. Competition is tough & I am not loving it. Too expensive to buy online, can't find it in the stores. Just cray!
ReplyDeleteYou learned about Pyrex from me (and many many other Pyrex fanatics) and I learned about blow molds from you. Aren't blog friends the greatest!!!
ReplyDeleteI love to find and collect Pyrex. There are so many fun and pretty patterns and it was easy to find. The prices used to be way more affordable but have gone up with the popularity of collecting increasing. Someday when people tire of collecting it, maybe the thrifts will be full of it again (I can dream).
ReplyDeleteDanielle
Never got on that bandwagon, although I have bought some to sell. I find Pyrex too heavy, too bulky and most of all too breakable. Melmac dishes for me all the way. I do however, love me some Jadeite!
ReplyDeleteLove my Pyrex! Seldom use Tupperware anymore for leftovers.
ReplyDeleteLol, I said that too, about 4 years ago...now I am obsessed with it. I have a booth and sell my doubles to buy more! Watch out, it is contagious....
ReplyDeleteCan I admit the only Pyrex I own and use is the totally modern glass stuff with plastic lids from Kohls? I thrift pyrex but always eBay or sell it locally. Although I do see the appeal in refrigerator sets. Those would get use at my house so if I find any I would probably keep them :)
