That Time I Thought I Had It Figured Out Before I Got There but Not Really.

Somewhere in Portland, OR, there’s a tiny antique mall space now open and ready for customers.

The (confusing & scribbled) General Idea.

The Dry Run.

The Before.

The During.

The After.

At this point, you might be asking yourself:  Why doesn’t the The After look anything like the The Dry Run? Where’s that white table?
Did it sell as it was being carried it into the store?
No.
No, it did not.
During the dry run, the white (drop-leaf) table didn’t have its leaves in place. I attached them later (er, after the dry run) and those leaves took up just enough space to prevent the garden cart from fitting under the table which prevented the chair from sitting on the table which wouldn’t allow the shelves to go behind the chair, blah blah blah...

The white table is now thinking it over in the garage where cars can’t park.

If I remember to travel with my camera, I’ll keep track of the evolution of this little space on Pinterest.
I’m happy to report I sold a few things while I was setting up. Woo-hoo!
Hope you’re having a terrific weekend.

  1. Amy, it's adorable. Sorry about the table and its accursed leaves. Isn't it astounding that items sell as you're setting up? It's like vultures feasting—they smell fresh meat. It looks great! XOX

  2. Amy, I just know that with your awesomeness in vintage taste, you will be one of the go-to spots! Way to go to sell right off of the bat. Wishing you much success, dear friend, in your space.

  4. Your tiny little ship looks wonderful Amy. We don't have anything like this in Australia (well I haven't seen any as sweet and small as yours anyway...)
I love, love, love those vintage pennants btw.

  8. Best of luck. Pretty much every time I have it figured out I realize it does not fit as planned. Every time... It just forces us to be even more creative! Happy selling.

  10. I love the wallpaper and curtains. They make the whole space and go perfectly with the painted wall behind your booth. Also, the chalkboard sign is quick and easy and you have a way to communicate with your customers. Good luck with your new project. Very exciting!

  11. That looks like a prime spot. Plus it's just about the right size to start off with (maybe just a few more inches so your table could fit in). I keep trying to get my sister to go check that place out (she lives in Portland), but no luck yet. She's not into vintage shopping all that much (gasp!).

  12. Congratulations on your set up!! I just moved from a space that was 36 inches wide to a space that is 60 inches and I found it much easier to place my items. I thought I had a good display Friday and then two customers pulled out my biggest pieces (and purchased them) so I had to go back to the drawing board. Luckily I had a few things stashed in my car!! You will have much success...your items are too cute!!

  13. Well done. I absolutely would gravitate towards it. Priced perfectly. Love that cart. Super excited for you. Of course I would go directly for the curtains and they would say NFS....smiles...Renee

  14. It looks great!! Wow, they really DO give you a blank slate to work from. I don't know why that surprised me but it did. Very well done and I am looking forward to seeing it in person.

  15. I'm guessing you'll be bringing that table in real soon just as soon as that cart and chair and those baskets sell which will probably be today:-) You are a master packer....it all looks fabulous!

  17. Finally a post with the finished photos. Seeing in midway through the reveal in person left me to wonder what magic you would work in the end. Good jenga vibes going on and looks adorable. Will pop back over for a in person looksie! Congrats again!

  18. I've never seen such a small booth - but you filled it up perfectly! I like a full booth - lots to look at and something for everyone! Mine is 6 feet by 7 feet with 8 foot tall walls. Every time I think I have it filled up, I figure out how to add even MORE! Good luck to you. I think you will do great!

  19. Well, congrats to you Missy! I think you did a fine, fine job in the end. You have to fill up a tiny space but not make it look like Fibber McGee's closet. (those who know who Fibber McGee was please raise your hands) Further making sure I'm firmly seated in the old, crusty, geriatric section I think that wallpaper would have been put up in a Rec-room or a Rumpus Room and I am so very, very sorry that I know this. - Kathy

  20. Isn't it wonderful that any design idea you had becomes moot, when people are buying your loot during setup?

    Here's to a perpetually failing design! :)

  21. I know you've "been there" in a small space in CA a long time ago, with linens and such ~ and now all your combined experiences are really showing off beautifully! This adventure, plus your shows, are going to keep you out pickin' anywhere, everywhere, any time(as if you really need an excuse!) I so much wish I could see this in person, but am on the wrong coast, dammit. Kathy (above, w/same name as me and probably nearly of same vintage): I DO know about that old radio show, and Amy's talent certainly won't allow it to get like Fibber and Molly's stuffed closet! Hey, this is just SO Vintage_Home: meaning, so "just right"... a long way from creating/sewing your vintage fabric pillows on eBay! (many still in use in my fluffy vintage cottage). I enjoy seeing your successes vicariously, through this blog.
    Be happy, kt

  23. the amount of time and thought put into your little space is apparent. i wish more people thought it out like you! it looks great and congrats on your first few sales. :)

  24. Hang on to the table with the leaves.... Something will sell very soon and you'll have room for it! Having a booth is a love/hate experience. You'll set up a new display and it will look SO good that someone buys the main centerpiece. Something inside you hates that the main centerpiece sold and you have to remind yourself that SELLING is why you got the booth in the first place!!! BTW..your space is great!!! I could never have done so much with so little room!!! Great job!

  25. Oh how fun! I miss having my little antique booth. I think I need to get back to this. Your booth is so cute--I would definitely have bought some things!

  31. I now have two booth spaces (one of which is only 7x3 and nothing can be higher than 36 inches!) so I can totally understand!

LOVE the idea of documenting the evolution on Pinterest. Just went over there to make sure I'm following you :-)

  32. The space turned out great. Your set up is eye-catching and interesting. And how nice you sold a few things during set up! I'm looking forward to reading more about your progress. Best of luck to you, Amy, on this new venture. I'd love to do the same but I don't think we have such a venue in Buffalo. So excited for you!

  34. Well, I know that this post is over a year old, but I've been reading your blog for a week and I'm getting super inspired! Even with your first tiny space where you began. I'm opening my space in 2 weeks at an antique mall in Colleyville, TX. I've been stressing about how to arrange my space, and I think I'm definitely going to do a dry run. I'm sure that will help a lot. Keep writing! I'm reading and taking notes.
