Even the road trips are big in Texas

Not to get too philosophical here but is a road trip still a road trip when there’s an airplane involved?

After a couple of years of discussion and reading about other’s adventures there, we decided this year was the year to see it for ourselves.

Next month, Magpie Ethel / Laurie and I are grabbing the biggest, emptiest suitcases we can find and heading to the Junking Promised Land known as Round Top, Texas (and beyond)!

Here’s the deal: Between Austin and Houston there’s a series of small towns, Warrenton, Round Top, Carmine, Shelby & Fayetteville to name a few, where thousands of antique & vintage dealers from all over the country come to sell.

And in between those towns are even more towns with more antique shows, shops & vintage events happening. From everything I’ve read, there is more to see than is humanly possible.

More than humanly possible.  Wheeee!

We toyed with driving the 2,000+ miles (and that’s only one way!) from Oregon to Texas, but that would have allowed for zero stops other than gas and sleeping (unless we wanted to be away for a few days weeks months) and I don’t know about you but Ethel & I, we like to stop.

To junk.

Eventually we came to our collective senses and decided for our inaugural visit we will fly to Texas, rent a car and then head for the hills, fields, shops and tents filled with junk, patiently waiting just for us to discover it.

And now, this junker turns to you for advice, suggestions, directions, things to see & do, things to definitely avoid, places to eat and anything else you might think of to share with us.  I thank you in advance.

As Ethel has been saying to me for weeks now, YEEHAW!

  4. FYI make sure your prepared to go through the highest levels of security at the airport. This happened to me when flying with empty bags last summer. Found out from a friend that works for the airlines that flying with empty bags is automatic red flag.

    1. I had no idea -- thanks for the heads up. No doubt the bags full of rusty metal junk for the return trip will also be a red flag!

  14. So wish I was going with you. If you can, pack all your clothes into a carry on and then pack the carry on in a bigger suitcase. Then you'll have a big suitcase for all your treasures. Have fun!

  16. That is going to be so much fun! Texas is huge, and kind of strange so you guys are in for a real treat! Watch for rhinestones. I swear, one women tried to bedazzle the shirt I was wearing when it was still on me! They like sparkle.
The Mom and I are driving up to Minneapolis in April for a junking trip. I wonder how different/same the things you and I find will be. So exciting!

  19. I have been thinking about doing the same thing -- we moved to Arkansas in December so are at least a little closer...I didn't even think about worrying about hotel reservations, so thanks to whoever gave that tip upthread. Maybe that will be the deciding factor for me. Hope you have a wonderful time!! Can't wait to read about it.

  20. Okay, so your post kicked my butt into making hotel reservations. Just FYI, the only hotel with availability I could find was the Super 8 in Brenham TX (I didn't check any B and Bs or fancy places, just the chains) and although it told me online they were booked I called and they had a room left for the 28th-30th. So I would call if you run into any trouble finding space online. THANKS for the motivation!!!

    1. Yay!! We'll just miss you by a day or so ... have a great time!! We found a place to stay a few weeks ago and realized pretty quickly we should have booked way in advance as you suggested. Hope you find a ton of treasures there!

  21. Oh my! I can only imagine the treasures you will bring home. Can't wait to see them! And BTW...I don't do twitter...(I have an account to keep tabs on the kiddies) but I'd love here what you gals are up to along the way!

  22. I am SO jealous! You are going to have such an awesome adventure. The hardest part is going to be passing up things that you just won't be able to send back home...it's torture!! Allow yourself to send things home, but you do the packing and save yourself megabucks vs. having someone do it for you. Looking forward to hearing all about your "road trip."

  23. Like I told Laurie, I am BEYOND jealous! You girls will have the best time. I love Texas and have been fortunate enough to visit several times but never to the areas that you are heading to. Play it by ear and go where the road takes you!

I am heading to Astoria next week to visit my sister and will be heading into Vintage Hardware. I am on the hunt for an old faucet for the old laundry room sink I just picked up at the recycle center.

  31. You'll have lots of fun. Bring a tractor trailer NOT a suitcase.

  32. As you will be staying in Brenham, do check out the antique malls in town. Many multi-dealer malls, the best/largest of which is in Hermann Furniture. Great places for lunch too. The air conditioned shops can be a good afternoon stop after the heat of the fields around Round Top!
