Dear Goodwill Store,

I think we need to talk.

Maybe it's me but lately you seem distant and overpriced. I always used to look forward to the time we spent together but now I feel like I'm only pretending to be interested in what you have to offer.

Please don't take this the wrong way but you've let yourself go.

Stopping by to see you just isn't the same. Remember the old days when I barely had to spend a dollar and we still had fun? What happened to us? I only have so much to give.

Maybe we just need to take a break.

(snowy view from my living room window today)

At least I'll always have these Shiny Brites to remember you by. Sigh.

  2. I rarely hit the goodwill anymore...you just don't find the treasures anymore. Glad you wrote them a note about it...hope it gets to the head honchos!

  3. Love your letter to GW. I have a love/hate relationship with them now. I go and look and get angry about the prices and then I find something that slipped through their pricing maze and I smile and put it in my cart. I must admit the number of times I smile is getting smaller....

  6. I know what you are saying. Some things are getting pricey but then there are treasures to still be had for $.99 cents. In one of my Vintage Monday posts I display a cute little red porcelain sleigh and reindeer which I just found at Goodwill for $.99 cents. A reader let me know who the manufacturer and date of the piece was.....which was fun. It sits in front of a Christmas Album (1965) that matches my decor of the family room and makes a pretty little grouping also for $.99 cents. I am a regular first name basis customer of Goodwill and when you go as much as I do, you will find something. When I do see an item that I want....that costs too much...... I have to remind myself that the money they raise goes to support and help so many others that are less fortunate.

  7. I've heard this from other bloggers - that Goodwill and Salvation Army stores are really getting overpriced. It seems wrong, doesn't it? I love your Shiny Brites - gorgeous color!

  9. Perfect....What happens when the economy's sinking???? Goodwill goes to town RAISING their prices....now, what's up with that? They get the stuff freeeee, right? The things that used to be 3.99 just went to 5.99.....nope, no 4.99 in the middle.........WHY, she asks? I'm frustrated too.

    Warm blessings,
    Spencer

  10. Oh...I so agree...a great once in awhile I find a deal, but all thrift stores are getting overpriced. My once cheap Salvation Army...$250 for an outdated 4 chair and table set. I wouldn't even pay that if it was redone. They had $350 on a silver tray...worth less then $10...it wasn't real. Yikes...makes me so sad!

  11. Oh..I agree...what are they thinking. Many times it is priced higher than if it was "new"...boo hoo

  12. Sometimes separation is good for a relationship. Maybe you just need a little time apart. Obviously, though, you can't be the only one willing to make an effort. I'm hoping it all will work out.

  13. I don't know if it's just my local Goodwill or not, but I never find anything in there! So many bloggers find wonderful things, and I go in with such hope and anticipation. Oh well. Maybe they've gotten a big head along with their big prices.

  14. I so agree. They've taken out the fun with high prices, too I think there are a lot more people out there looking for treasures and they are depleting the selection. I say we go thirifting as much as possible and not give up. Perhaps have a chat with your GW manager about prices. It did work for awhile at mine and they appreciate cstomer feedback.

  15. Oh, Carol...I know just what you mean!! Someone goes through our Goodwill store and prices everything they even 'think' is vintage, very very high.

Great photos of those Shiny Brites, though!! I love them!!

  16. I agree with you also....sometyimes the things are higher than new! But I make comments loudly so the staff can hear....I can be such a stinker! It is hit or miss with most thrift stores anymore. We have a chain called Savers in AZ and I just quit going....they went nuts with their pricing! And they have some great things, but I will not pay prices that are too high. Maybe we need to send a letter to coporate! :) Sandy

  17. It must be a nation wide policy on their part. Goodwill is a bad joke now, Salvation Army even worse. Their prices are laughable if they didn't make my so mad! Talk about greed!!!

  18. I agree about goodwill, but have had much better luck at Satvation Army. I've also noticed that thrift shops in high-rent districts are usually higher priced, in the everyday blue-collar area's they seem to be cheaper! I'm glad you got the adorable shiny-brites as a smbol of your past love affair, though. Tee Hee!

  19. I just recently found out that here in California all the Goodwill stores have a 50% off sale on all items (except new merchandise) on most holidays. Today I scored many nice linens for a bargin price. Happy to share the news - plenty of stuff to go around... Pam from WarmHugsDesign.etsy.com

  20. ERR, I agree with you all! I was just at a Goodwill in Hamden, CT and they had a small vintage 45 record player that did not work priced at $39.99. I went to the counter and told the lady at the counter it was over priced I'd give her $20.00 for it. This is what she said...

"I checked Ebay and these are going for much higher than $39.00."

Well, I searched ebay when I got home and a DEALER'S (Buy it Now Price) for an OPERATIONAL PLAYER was $50.00!! CAN YOU BELIEVE THIS? Totally out of control.

  21. Dear Hamden CT annon. I also live in CT and go to Wallingford Goodwill and Hamden Goodwill and SA.
I've said this on another site and I think its worth repeating,

Thrift stores fail to understand that Ebay only works because the people that are bidding on an item want to win! They feel that they must "beat" that other bidder that is halfway around the world. Ebay prices will NOT work in any other context.
Even Buy it Now prices on Ebay don't work as well as the auctions. The Goodwill cannot successfully sell an item at a price that it sold for on Ebay.

I'm sure I've seen you around, especially on half price days. I'm glad I saw your post.
