Welcome to my upholstery shop.
That's right. I finally did it.
You may recall this previous post where I outed my hideous indoor-outdoor-carpet-covered dining room chairs with the hope that I would be inspired enough to take action and recover the darn things already. I even had the vintage fabric. And a newly purchased electric staple gun. What was my problem!?
The problem was this: The longer I looked at the fabric, the less sure I was about it. I liked it but too much brown in it to go on brown wooden chairs, I thought.
Please meet Plan B.
I brought home this vintage barkcloth for another project altogether (scrapped!) but when I casually tossed it across one of the chairs, it became the new vintage chair fabric.
Voila!
And with the chairs completed, I can now turn my attention to the I'm-over-it white sideboard...
Paint swatches from Martha Stewart at Home Depot.
Hope it's warm & dry where you are. Raining sideways here today.
I love how your chairs came out. Love the look and feel of barkcloth. I've actually considered covering my chairs with some. Just haven't got around to it - yet.

Amy,
ReplyDeleteThey look terrific!!!!...good job!
Barkcloth is one one my favorites...reminds me of Mom's living room drapes when I was young!
I still love my tea towels & got from you (they match my pillow you made, remember??)! I have them hanging over 2 of the kitchen chairs in my breakfast room. Yesterday, my hubs laid his shirts for the laundry over one of the chairs & picked up my towel!! It went to the laundry, too! Hope they are gentle with it!!! HA!

The chairs came out beautifully!! Love the flowers...good choice.

I'm assuming you're not going to let anyone actually sit in the chairs. They should stand behind them, hands resting on the back, and admire how you centered that floral pattern.
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely love the fabric - looks stunning!
ReplyDeleteOh! Those chairs are wonderful! Takes me back to my childhood. Or someone elses. I'm certainly not old enough to remember that type of material... ;o) Truly, they turned out gorgeous. Are you painting that sideboard blue? I definitely want to see that one when it's completed. - Kathy
ReplyDeleteThis fabric is PERFECT for the chairs! Of course, in my humble opinion, barkcloth is perfect for just about everything.
ReplyDeleteOh my word, it's just perfect! Can't wait to see what color you'll choose for the sideboard!
ReplyDeleteMuch better! Barkcloth solves any problem!
ReplyDeleteThat barkcloth is fabulous! Perfect! I can't wait to see the I'm over it sideboard when finished - along with the complete room!
ReplyDeleteI love Barbara's comment. I just love Barbara!
I was reading my friends blog Sewn With Grace and saw your comments. My husband was suppose to drive to Chicago yesterday but couldn't due to high winds etc. we actually live in a small town outside of Kalamazoo, Small world.
ReplyDeleteRaining heavily here today. Do not like.
ReplyDeleteI love that barkcloth for the chairs! It works beautifully.

Well, you just can't go wrong with mid century barkcloth now can ya? The brown would have been lovely, but this one is perfect :->
ReplyDeleteJust perfect, Amy! I also love the colors you picked out for the sideboard....you're on a roll!
ReplyDeleteLove the "I'm over it " statement. I think many of us will be saying that in the near future. When will we be unique and stop following everyone else?? Love the 'new' chairs..I am in the process of recovering mine. How about a little tutorial for us newbies??

Yes, I am in love with your new choice! It's perfect! Are you working on a complete transformation?
ReplyDeleteBTW, I love the Home Depot (Behr, I believe) paint with the built in primer. Just saying......
And you "got it covered" so beautifully! What a transformation.

Plan B is perfect! Your chairs have such pretty backs and now they finally have the seats they deserve. I wish it was easier to get my hands on some barkcloth for a reasonable price.
ReplyDeleteTina's right - Barbara definitely has the winning comment. :)
Yummy 50s fabric. I love it.
ReplyDeleteWow! I love them!
