Write here, right now.

Making chalkboards isn’t exactly a new-fangled idea but I am a simple gal who has a soft spot for easy projects that have already been perfected, in this case, by countless chalkboard-makers before me.
For me, chalkboards are all about the frames they’re in.

(Frames that were made by somebody else, of course, although I have been known to paint some of them. See previous sentences for references to simple gal and easy projects).

And maybe there’s a clever phrase or two, written in ... well, chalk.

The only word I could come up with: Scarves.

Simple. Gal.
It’s right about here where ‘simple gal’ takes on a whole new meaning because for some reason I’m at a loss for words when it comes to writing on the chalkboards I’ve made.
Other than something subtle like “THIS IS A CHALKBOARD” or “I AM FOR SALE” or “I CAN’T THINK OF ANYTHING TO WRITE HERE,” words escape me.
So now I just take the vintage hieroglyphics route.

THIS IS A CHALKBOARD.  *sigh*

  1. The only problem I see with this approach is that I would not want to erase your very, very nice drawings. I feel as if you've revealed something other than your love of simple projects here.

  3. Well I adore your hieroglyphics! My talent to draw anything anybody would recognize is zero to none.
And you could always add "phone home", "picture this" and "road trip".

  5. I believe historians will someday identify these as Aquarian Age Art Deco Hieroglyphs used primarily by junking nomads of North America....

  8. Something about the contrast between the black and white. The child like emotion it evokes. All of it that screams simply beautiful. I love it in words and pictures...smiles..Renee

P.S. this from someone who tends to over think things...

  11. At least you wrote something on yours! I just made some and totally left them blank...lol. I didn't even think to actually write on them before I photographed them. Sigh. Now I feel like a huge fail. ;)

  13. Love these and have been meaning to make some out of the multitude of old frames sitting in my garage. What do you use for the backing that you paint the chalkboard paint on?

  14. Melissa: I use the smooth, backside of beadboard. It's inexpensive for a really big sheet at Home Depot and I usually have them cut it half (for free) so I can get it in my car. Then I cut to size at home with my little orbital jigsaw.

  23. Saw this on the Country Living FB wall...Love your chalkboards! For the window frame chalk boards, did you paint the glass or use some sort of insert? I have a bunch of old windows and was thinking of doing that, too, but wasn't sure the paint would work on glass...
